WHAT IT’S ABOUT
Warner Bros. has released another collection of Tom & Jerry cartoons from the 40s and 50s. Fourteen classic animated favorites are available on a single disc for more than an hour and a half of chases and slapstick.

WHAT I LIKED
I am on record as being a long-time fan of the Tom & Jerry cartoon series (with the exception of the strange Gene Dietch set). The classic cartoons are my favorite, even if they have been re-edited and sanitized over the year.

To call a collection “Greatest Chases” is painting with a broad brush for the cat and mouse team. After all, they end up in a massive chase scene in practically every installment ever made. These cartoons, however, sample from the earlier years, including a couple from the early 40s installments when Tom was more of a fur ball.

The episodes included on this disc are “Cat Napping,” “The Flying Cat,” “The Two Mouseketeers,” “Smitten Kitten,” “Baby Butch,” “Designs on Jerry,” “Pecos Pest,” “Touche, Pussy Cat!,” “The Flying Sorceress,” “Blue Cat Blues,” “The Night Before Christmas,” “The Bowling Alley-Cat,” “Fine Feathered Friend” and “Puttin’ on the Dog.”

What’s nice about the assortment in this release is that you have some holiday favorites, including the witch-themed “They Flying Sorceress” for Halloween and “The Night Before Christmas” old-school holiday favorite.

With a running time less than two hours, this is a nice disc to pop in with the kids and enjoy the cartoons and think to yourself, “They don’t make ‘em like they used to.”

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
The films are compiled, though not remastered. This is strictly a release to see the cartoons again rather than to watch them in a brilliant transfer. But they’re still tons of fun.

DVD FEATURES
Aside from a slate of more than a half dozen trailers for other Warner Bros. kids videos, there’s no special features.
