WHAT IT’S ABOUT
“Prison Break: The Final Break” fills in the gaps to the final season of the popular FOX television show. Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) and brother Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) may have found an end to their days on the run, but their prison breaks are not over. The Feds have arrested Sara Tancredi (Sarah Wayne Callies) for the murder of Christina Scofield. As a former prison doctor with a price on her head and a woman who helped the Fox River Eight escape, she has become a marked woman. Michael and his ex-con buddies must work together to break her out of prison before she is killed by either the prisoners or the guards.
WHAT I LIKED
If you were to have asked me whether it would be possible to continue the “Prison Break” story after the team was exonerated at the end of season four, I would have said no, at least without jumping the shark in the process. Well, there might have been a little shark skipping in stretching the story to a final DVD movie, but it was pretty decent nonetheless.
I was never a big fan of the character of Sara Tancredi during the show. I personally thought Jodi Lyn O’Keefe was much hotter and more interesting. However, by giving her a meaty storyline, she was able to rise to the occasion to make the film work.
The most interesting parts about the “Prison Break” series was the “Mission: Impossible” style of teamwork that Michael and Lincoln managed. This continues to a lesser degree in “Prison Break: The Final Break,” but it is still there. We are back to the flavor of the original seasons and get away from the “24” and “Alias” flavor the series took on in the last season.
While Sarah Wayne Callies gets a chance to shine a bit in her role, the scene stealer in this movie is Lori Petty as a female version of T-Bag in the ladies’ big house. Her part is small, but she is easily the most memorable character in the film.
And speaking of T-Bag, as awful as he is, he’s a hoot to watch, and it’s great to see him – and Gretchen Morgan – come back for a final curtain call.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
Although I commend the filmmakers for giving us a relatively unique spin on the four-season series, this movie does seem to be overkill. It’s really only pertinent to the fans of the series who really want to discover what happens before that tag at the end of season four.
