“Mr. 3000” was one of those movies that you’ll probably forget in a couple years. It’s one of those films that will make its way on the main floor of Blockbuster or Hollywood Video and sit, unrented for months. You might catch it on cable in the year 2015 and say, “I don’t remember this Bernie Mac movie.”
It wasn’t a great film, but it wasn’t a bad film either. It was fun, the characters were sweet, and the story had a good, positive message. That’s more than you’ll get from most movies hitting DVD this year.
In this film, Bernie Mac plays baseball legend Stan Ross, who antagonized the press and not a few fans during his career. He impulsively retires after making his 3000th base hit, sure that this feat will ensure him a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame. However, the sports press still won’t forgive him for some of the things he’s said, and he’s been kept out for years.
When they retire his number and put him on the verge of being voted in, it suddenly comes out that a bookkeeping error resulted in three of his runs being counted twice. Now, as Mr. 2997, he doesn’t stand a chance to get to the Hall of Fame unless he rejoins the game and makes three more hits.
This is your pretty standard over-the-hill sports hero story with an uplifting message to be nice. Sure, that message wasn’t even new when Thumper brought it to the screen in 1942’s “Bambi,” but it still works.
Ultimately, this movie is a showcase for Bernie Mac and his comedic talents. He stole the show in films like “Charlie’s Angels 2” and “Bad Santa.” If you like the man’s style, it’s a good bet you’ll like this film.
The DVD has a nice selection of extras. Director Charles Stone III gives a pretty cogent commentary, adding some insight into the film’s production. A series of deleted scenes are also available with the director commentary, which always helps add some value to the disc.
There are a couple behind-the-scenes featurettes, including an insightful look at the journey of the baseball extras in this film. Many of the players in the movie are baseball players that never made it into the big league. It’s a little heartwarming to see these folks actually get a chance to be out on the field and play ball, with thousands of fans watching live and millions of fans watching on television.
One of the best features is the full uncut cameo scenes from ESPN’s SportsCenter, The Tonight Show and the cheesy Mr. 3000 commercials used in the film. Finally, there’s a pretty funny outtake reel, mostly showing Bernie Mac goofing off.
I don’t know jack about sports. I don’t know if I could name five professional baseball players working today without just guessing at some names like Martinez. (Doesn’t every team have a Martinez playing for them?) However, I like a good sports movie. In fact, sports is even more exciting on the big screen for make-believe than on live television. I have to admit, I had fun with this movie.
