"DISNEY PRINCESS SING-ALONG SONGS VOL. 3 – PERFECTLY PRINCESS" DVD Review by Kevin Carr
“Perfectly Princess” is the latest installment in the popular line of Disney Princess DVDs. This disc is the third volume of the Sing-Along Songs from existing princess stories.
Originally, the Disney Princess Collection had three separate types of DVDs – the stories, the Sing-Alongs and the Princess Party. As subsequent waves were released, the Sing-Along Songs got behind a volume. Now is the catch-up time with this single release.
It’s pretty easy to predict whether or not you’ll like the Disney Princess Sing-Along Songs. If you’re a young girl and love the songs from all the Disney animated film, you’re in the target market. However, you’ll want to be a little leery of this disc if you’re looking for a selection of classic Disney songs. The problem with the Princess Sing-Alongs so far is that they’re running out of the beloved movies and are digging into the playlists of the direct-to-video sequels.
In fact, on Volume 3, only four songs come from the original theatrical releases. Sure, all the princesses are represented here – Ariel, Cinderella, Jasmine, Belle, Pocahontas, Snow White and Mulan. However, the main source of songs on this disc are other DVDs. Sequels to “Cinderella,” “Aladdin,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Mulan” and “The Little Mermaid” are all mined.
The only songs from the classic films include “Whistle While You Work” from “Snow White,” “All in the Golden Afternoon” from “Alice in Wonderland,” “The Work Song” from “Cinderella” and “Belle” from “Beauty and the Beast.”
I tend to be of the school of thought which says the direct-to-video sequels are substandard to the original. They’re not necessarily terrible songs. However, they’re not exactly going to spark nostalgia and excitement for the original. Still, if you are that 8-year-old girl who loves all things Disney Princess, this isn’t a concern.
The DVD comes with a “Princess Pen Pals” activity. Viewers can choose different topics to put in a letter to different princesses. Then, after sending the letter, they’ll get a personalized response from the princess. These letters are printable at the end of the activity.
Also included in the case is a mini storybook, which also serves as ad space for upcoming Disney products. The storybook tell very abbreviated stories from the world of “Beauty and the Beast” and “Sleeping Beauty.”
The only other special feature is a karaoke option for some of the songs. Like Volume 2 of the Disney Princess Sing-Along, this feature allows you to sing along with the music of the songs. It’s a fun activity, but it’s too bad there aren’t enough of the classics to sing along with.
Specifications: Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fullscreen aspect ration (1.33:1). French language track. English subtitles for the hearing impaired.
