Similar to how I was worried that DreamWorks’ “Kung Fu Panda” would be a stinker of a film, last year I was concerned that “Alvin and the Chipmunks” wouldn’t be that great. After all, we’ve seen some pretty weak CGI animals in the past few years.

However, my reaction to “Alvin and the Chipmunks” was pleasant surprise. It helped that I brought my two young sons with me to the movie. They absolutely adored the film, and it’s not uncommon to hear them singing the Chipmunk Christmas Song around the house... especially at this time of year.
They got the soundtrack CD and have listened to it literally hundreds of times. My five-year-old even sings in a high-pitched chipmunk voice. I’m so familiar with the Alvin repertoire that when I was at the store a few months back and heard Daniel Powter singing “Bad Day” over the speakers, I thought it sounded wrong in his particular key.
After seeing how much joy that Alvin and the Chipmunks have brought to my kids, I believe that you just can’t have too much of these cute little rodents.
And that’s a good thing, considering that “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Special Edition” has recently come to DVD.
If you didn’t pick up a copy of this movie for your kids this spring, then you’ll want to grab this new DVD for them as we lead into the holiday season. The case is decked out in Christmas lights, and while it offers the same film, it has plenty of extra features to enjoy at home with the kids.
There’s a second disc for Digital Copy, which allows you to download the film to your portable device easily, but the first disc is more than just a rehash of the previous release.
There’s two deleted scenes and music videos of “Witch Doctor” and “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)” from the movie. There’s a whimsical mockumentary called “Behind the Nuts Munkumentary” which shows what divas the chipmunks can be.
Additional featurettes include “Chipmunks Live on Tour!,” “The Dudes Behind the Munks” which spotlights Justin Long (Alvin), Matthew Gray Gubler (Simon) and Jesse McCartney (Theodore) as performers, and “Get Munked,” and instructional video which teaches viewers the funky chipmunk dance.
Finally, for the fan of the interactive DVD, there’s a Chipmunk Funk Mixer which allows the viewer to remix the song “How We Roll.”
