Columbus, Oh., May 13, 2002 - 7M Pictures' award-winning short film, Ghost Reader will show at Marcon, The Midwest's Premiere Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention, on Saturday, May 25th. Ghost Reader, directed by Columbus resident Kelly Carr, is the story of a time when humans have lost the ability to read. In the film, humans rely on mechanical servants called Ghost Readers to read to them. However, one man (played by indie film sensation, Jon Osbeck) soon learns that the Ghost Readers are not as benevolent as they first appear. A trailer for the movie can be seen on 7M Pictures' web site at www.7mpictures.com. Ghost Reader is based on a short story by Kevin Carr, which first appeared in the science fiction magazine Pirate Writings in 1995. The author, who has had several other stories published in the science fiction field, is also known for his paranormal column "Surreal World" in Pirate Writings (now Fantastic Stories, published by DNA Publications). "We are very excited to be showing at Marcon this year," says director Kelly Carr. "This convention is for die hard fans of science fiction and fantasy, and it will be exciting to see their reaction to our film." Carr worked in conjunction with the Ohio Film Commission to shoot the short film at the Thurber House, the family home of James Thurber. "I loved the irony of making a movie about a civilization that can't read and shooting it in the home of one of America's greatest writers," says Carr. Ghost Reader won the Best Drama audience award at the Drop Your Shorts Film Festival earlier this year. It also has been entered on the festival circuit and is shown regularly at the Detonate Film Expo in Miami, Fl. For 37 years the Multiple Alternative Realities Convention, Marcon, has been bringing together science fiction and fantasy dealers, filmmakers, guest speakers, gamers and fans from all across the nation. This year the event will take place at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Columbus, Ohio during Memorial Day Weekend. The first time for registration is 3:00pm on Friday, May 24th and the event will conclude on Sunday, May 26 at 5pm. Tickets for the entire convention are $35 until May 6th and $50 at the door with discounts for children or single day admission. This year's Marcon will have an abundance of activities. A Charity Auction, Masquerade Ball, Short Story contest, Youth Oriented Activities, and guest speakers are scheduled. Visit www.marcon.org for up-to-date information or to register for this year's Marcon. On Friday, May 24th, there will be a Filmmakers Seminar that will include a panel of speakers in the filmmaking industry. Kelly Carr, as well as Ghost Reader's producer, John W. Mader and the writer/director of photography, Kevin Carr, will be a part of the panel to discuss the film as well as filmmaking in Ohio. They will also be present for the film showing and presentation on Saturday, May 25th. For more information on Ghost Reader, please contact 7M Pictures at (614) 439-3456 or 7m@7mpictures.com.
